Almoradi history and local information
Another of the ancient towns of the Vega Baja district, Almoradi is located on the northern side of the River Segura, near to the town of Rojales and the village of Algorfa, it has a population of 17,494 (2006) and is a traditional Spanish town with a history going back some 3,000 years.
According to legend, Almoradi was originally called Amarión and was founded in 1196 BC by a king named Brigo, subsequently settled by Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Visigoths it later came under the control of the Moors who gave the town its current name (meaning “my will and desire” in Arabic). Almoradi was re-conquered for Castile by the Christians in the mid-thirteenth century and was placed under the jurisdiction of Orihuela, both later becoming part of the Kingdom of Valencia, Almoradi gained its independence in 1586.
Almoradi suffered worse than almost any town or village in the region when the great earthquake hit in 1829, and on the fateful day of 21st March of that year, Almoradi was almost totally destroyed. In the aftermath of that terrible day, Almoradi had to be entirely re-built and there is little left of the town from before that date.
For its economic survival, Almoradi has relied mainly on agriculture over the years, and unique irrigation systems put in place by the Moors made the surrounding area fertile and productive, the main crops being oranges and lemons. Another significant industry for the town is the manufacture of furniture.
Underlining the importance of water to the region, Almoradi is the home of a historic water tribunal which was founded to resolve disputes over land irrigation. This ancient institution still imposes fines in Vellón Reals (which are coins from the Spain’s ancient past).
Worth a visit is the Church of San Andres which is notable for its beautiful organ and for its figure of Christ, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the one which overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the church is dedicated to San Andres (Saint Andrew) the patron saint of Almoradi. Other notable places to visit in the town are the elegant 120 year old Casino and El Teatro Cortés (a theatre where traditional Spanish plays are performed) both located in the town square.
Almoradi’s very popular weekly market is held on Saturdays and is a great place to stock up on fresh locally grown produce and maybe a gift or two. Almoradi has its share of fiestas and celebrations, the main one being the Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians held at the end of July.
Almoradi is located on the CV-905 just off the CV-91 between Guardamar del Segura and Orihuela and is about 15 kilometres from Orhuela.
